Osteopathic Manipulation
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM/OMT)
Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT) or Medicine (OMM) is a hands-on, evidence-informed approach to care used exclusively by osteopathic physicians (DOs). Through skilled manual techniques—such as gentle pressure, stretching, balanced tension, and joint mobilization—OMM helps diagnose and treat problems affecting the muscles, joints, nerves, and connective tissues.
This approach is built on the osteopathic philosophy that the body’s structure and function are closely connected, that the body has an innate ability to heal, and that it is continually striving toward a state of greater health. By improving alignment, mobility, circulation, and nervous-system balance, OMM can relieve pain, restore movement, enhance recovery, and support overall wellness. It can be used on its own or alongside conventional medical treatments to create a comprehensive and personalized care plan.

DOs do more
Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) to treat the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—focusing on the interconnectedness of structure and function to promote the body's natural healing, often addressing root causes, alleviating pain, and improving overall wellness, not just symptoms. It involves using touch to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal issues, complementing other medical treatments for a holistic, individualized approach.
4 Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine
-
Structure and Function are Reciprocally Interrelated: The physical structure of the body directly affects its function, and vice versa.
-
Rational Treatment is Based on Understanding These Principles: Treatment involves using the body's self-healing abilities, with an understanding of the unity, self-regulation, and structure-function relationships.
-
The Body is a Unit: A person is a complete whole, interconnected by body, mind, and spirit.

-
The Body is Capable of Self-Regulation, Self-Healing, and Health Maintenance: The body naturally seeks to heal and maintain health.
