Integrative Medicine

Integrative Medicine combines conventional medical treatments with complementary therapies that have been shown to be safe and effective, such as acupuncture, osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), meditation, and yoga, to treat the whole person—mind, body, and spirit

Osteopathic medicine is a "whole person" approach to healthcare that treats the entire patient, not just the symptoms.

Osteopathic Medicine was founded in 1874 by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still.  2024 mark3ed the 1505h anniversary of osteopathic medicine and now we have almost 150,000 doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) in the United States.  Our training is very similar to medical doctors (MDs), enough so that we often share residency training and are seen as equivalent in the eyes of our state and federal governments.  DOs receive an additional curriculum in medical school to create an improved understanding of the musculoskeletal system and how it interacts with the rest of our body.  This training augments our ability to detect and heal our patients.

What is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment?

  • Is the generic term used to refer to many different manipulation techniques

  • Can be used to treat structural and functional issues in the bones, joints, tissues and muscles of the body

  • Uses the relationship between the neuromusculoskeletal system and the rest of the body to restore functionality and/or remove barriers to motion and healing

  • Achieves and maintains patient health as part of a whole system of evaluation and treatment

What is a Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine specialist?

  • DOs that spend an additional year devoted to refining their manipulation skills to become a specialist in neuromusculoskeletal medicine.

What is Medical Acupuncture?

Medical acupuncture is an evidence-based approach to acupuncture practiced by licensed physicians who have completed additional, rigorous training in acupuncture science and techniques. Because it is practiced by medical doctors, medical acupuncture integrates modern biomedical knowledge—such as anatomy, physiology, neurology, and pain science—with the therapeutic principles of acupuncture.

Physician acupuncturists evaluate patients through a conventional medical lens first, using diagnosis, imaging, and laboratory findings when appropriate. Acupuncture is then applied as part of a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to the patient’s medical condition.
